A Confident Child Is Unstoppable: Attorney Teri Lee Thompson Expands Global Girls’ Empowerment Movement in 2026
By Richard Akorede
Attorney Teri Lee Thompson, a veteran federal defense attorney with more than three decades of legal experience, is expanding her impact beyond the courtroom in 2026 through her growing girls’ empowerment initiatives and international literacy outreach.
After 33 years in law, Thompson made a pivotal career shift, stepping into entrepreneurship as an author, publisher, and founder of the Girls Who Rise movement and the nonprofit organization Justice Redefined. The transition marked a reinvention of purpose, moving from high-stakes federal defense litigation to preventive advocacy focused on strengthening girls before they encounter systemic barriers.
“Reinventing myself as an author focused on building confidence in young girls required faith,” Thompson said. “There are no guarantees when you step into purpose, but I knew I could not ignore the assignment.”
Her children’s book, Kinky, Curly, Mine, was created to affirm identity and self-worth in young girls. While the book achieved strong sales domestically, its broader impact became evident when educators in Ghana began using her materials in classroom discussions centered on self-love and confidence-building. Teachers have incorporated pages from her coloring books into structured conversations about identity and self-respect, expanding the reach of her message internationally.
“This is true impact,” Thompson said. “When children are discussing self-love because of something I created, that is bigger than any award.”
Through Girls Who Rise, Thompson leads structured programs designed to cultivate confidence, leadership skills, and academic resilience in girls across communities. Her nonprofit, Justice Redefined, focuses on early intervention strategies intended to steer youth away from the criminal justice system by strengthening identity, decision-making skills, and long-term educational outcomes.
Thompson’s advocacy is informed by her own experience overcoming doubt early in her academic career. After being told by a professor that she would never become an attorney and receiving a failing grade, she persisted, ultimately building a distinguished legal career that spans capital cases nationwide.
“I believed in myself when others didn’t,” she said. “That belief carried me forward.”
As 2026 progresses, Thompson is focused on building sustainable systems that address prevention at the community level. Her initiatives connect increased confidence with improved graduation rates, stronger family structures, and reduced justice system involvement.
Her message remains clear: confidence is foundational.
“A confident child changes the narrative,” Thompson said. “When we strengthen girls, we strengthen communities.”
With books circulating internationally and empowerment programs expanding, Attorney Teri Lee Thompson continues redefining justice through prevention, education, and identity-driven leadership.
