PayPal Goes Live in Nigeria Through Paga Partnership, Opening Cross-Border Payments
By Darasimi Kikelomo
PayPal has gone live in Nigeria through a partnership with Paga, allowing Nigerians to receive international payments and access funds in naira, official reports show.
PayPal, the global payments and commerce platform, has officially gone live in Nigeria, enabling users to receive international payments directly into their digital wallets and access the funds in Naira, reports from fintech and business news outlets confirm.
The development comes through a **strategic partnership with Nigeriaโs fintech company Paga, which allows Nigerians to link their PayPal accounts to their Paga digital wallets and receive cross-border payments from PayPal-supported markets.
Before this launch, Nigerian users could largely send payments via PayPal, but receiving international payments and withdrawing locally had been restricted for many years. Under the new arrangement, users can now:
- Receive PayPal payments directly into their Paga wallets
- Withdraw earnings locally in naira
- Shop with global PayPal merchants
- Transfer funds to local bank accounts, pay bills, or spend via Pagaโs integrated Visa card
All without relying on workarounds previously used by freelancers and small businesses.
The move represents a significant milestone for Nigeriaโs digital economy, especially for freelancers, online entrepreneurs and small businesses that depend on international earnings. By bridging global PayPal receipts with Nigeriaโs local economy, the partnership aims to deepen financial inclusion and broaden participation in cross-border commerce.
According to fintech reports, the integration opens access to PayPalโs global network of more than 400 million users, enabling Nigerian merchants to expand their reach internationally.
Tayo Oviosu, Founder and Group CEO of Paga, said the integration makes it easier for users across Nigeria to access and use global funds locally in a secure and simple way, whether for freelance income, business revenue or global shopping. Meanwhile, PayPal leadership noted that partnering with local innovators like Paga supports broader financial inclusion and helps more consumers and businesses engage confidently in the digital economy.
To use the service, Nigerians must link their PayPal accounts to the Paga app or website, after which they can begin receiving and managing international payments through Pagaโs digital wallet platform.
