By Darasimi KIkelomo
Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Amicitia Maloon-Gibson shares her journey from the U.S. Virgin Islands to global executive leadership in GLEBM’s International Women’s Day 2026 special edition.
When Dr. Amicitia Maloon-Gibson left the U.S. Virgin Islands at just 18 years old, she stepped into uncertainty with conviction few her age possess. Assigned to Fort McClellan, Alabama, then a minimally diverse community, she quickly encountered adversity that would shape her philosophy on leadership, resilience, and faith.
“I experienced a level of hate I had never seen before,” she recalls. “But I chose to respond with excellence. My parents taught me to treat everyone with dignity and respect. Quitting was never an option.”
That decision marked the beginning of a distinguished military and executive career that would span global service, senior Department of Defense leadership, nonprofit governance, and transformational executive consulting.
As part of GLEBM Magazine’s Audacious 30: Women Shaping 2026, Dr. Maloon-Gibson exemplifies bold, purpose-driven leadership rooted in faith and fortified by discipline.
Bold Leadership Begins with Action
Dr. Maloon-Gibson did more than adapt, she advanced. In environments where she was often the only Black woman in the room, she volunteered to serve as an Equal Opportunity advisor and trainer. Diversity, equity, and inclusion were not optional commitments; they were personal mandates.

“I act even in uncertainty,” she explains. “Transparency and resilience are non-negotiable.”

She later retired again as a senior executive leader after serving in key positions across the Department of Defense, nonprofit organizations, and boards of directors.Today, she continues her impact as founder of a technology enterprise and the MG Center for Excellence, focused on professional development and leadership cultivation.

Ordained in 2005, she serves faithfully in the AME Church and draws strength from scripture, particularly Psalms 23 and 121.
“When things get difficult, I pray and trust God’s timing,” she says. “Prayer changes things.”
Her faith is not separate from her leadership, it informs it.
Overcoming Barriers of Race, Gender, and Culture
As a Black woman of West Indian heritage, Dr. Maloon-Gibson faced obstacles tied to race, gender, and ethnicity.
