Delta Workers Return to Duty as Labour Suspends Protest Over Official’s Death

By GLEBM News Desk

Workers in Delta State have resumed official duties after organised labour suspended its protest over the death of Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director in the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The Nigeria Labour Congress in Delta directed workers to return to their duty posts after reaching an understanding with the state government and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The decision followed the constitution of an administrative panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adeda’s death.

The NLC said the criminal dimension of the matter was already being handled by the police, with arrests reportedly made in connection with the incident.

The labour movement had previously shut down the state secretariat in Asaba as part of its protest, demanding action over the circumstances surrounding the official’s death.

The suspension of the industrial action means government services that were disrupted by the protest can resume while the investigations proceed.

The development illustrates the role of organised labour in responding to issues involving the safety and welfare of workers, particularly where employees believe official institutions have failed to adequately address concerns.

For the state government, the administrative inquiry provides a formal mechanism for examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and determining whether administrative failures or other factors contributed to the death.

The police investigation is expected to address the criminal aspect of the matter separately.

Labour said workers had been instructed to return to their respective duty posts from 8am following the agreement reached with the state government.

The return to work does not necessarily end the matter, as the outcome of the investigations is expected to determine whether further action is required.

The episode also highlights the importance of effective workplace safety mechanisms and institutional procedures for responding to disputes involving government employees.

For organised labour, the central issue remains ensuring that concerns raised by workers receive appropriate investigation and that any individual found responsible through due process is held accountable.

The immediate suspension of the protest has restored normal operations in the affected government offices while the investigation continues.
