Steel Workers Warn of Fresh Industrial Unrest Over Unimplemented Agreements

By GLEBM News Desk

Nigeria’s steel and engineering sector could face renewed industrial disputes if agreements reached between workers, employers and government are not fully implemented, organised labour has warned.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the impact of inflation, rising transportation and food costs and declining purchasing power on Nigerian workers.

The union representing workers in the steel and engineering sector has stressed that effective collective bargaining and continuous engagement are essential to preventing industrial conflicts.

It disclosed that a ₦40,000 salary and wage increase had been negotiated for workers covered by a National Joint Industrial Council agreement, while discussions are also being pursued for additional economic relief measures.

The union has submitted proposals for further palliatives to employers as workers continue to face increased living costs.

Labour representatives are also monitoring ownership changes within companies to ensure that workers’ jobs, accumulated benefits and union rights are protected when businesses undergo restructuring or changes in ownership.

The situation reflects the broader pressure confronting Nigerian workers as businesses attempt to manage rising operating costs while employees seek wages capable of keeping pace with inflation.

Sustained industrial peace will require more than negotiated agreements. Implementation, transparent communication and regular engagement between employers, government and workers will be critical to preventing disputes from escalating into strikes and production disruptions.
