JUSUN Declares Indefinite Strike in Nasarawa Over Judiciary Financial Autonomy
By GLEBM News Desk
The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Nasarawa State branch, has declared an indefinite strike over concerns surrounding the implementation of financial autonomy for the state’s judiciary.
The action adds to a wider national discussion about the practical implementation of financial autonomy for state judiciaries and the ability of judicial institutions to independently manage their finances.
Reports indicate that the Nasarawa branch took the decision after concerns that expected arrangements for judiciary financial autonomy had not been fully implemented.
Financial autonomy is intended to give the judiciary greater control over its finances and reduce dependence on executive authorities for routine funding.
For judicial workers, the issue affects administration, salaries, infrastructure and the overall functioning of courts.
JUSUN has historically made financial autonomy one of its major labour demands.
An indefinite strike by judiciary workers can affect court administration, filing processes, case scheduling and other support functions.
For litigants, delays can have significant consequences, particularly where cases involve urgent commercial, criminal or family matters.
Businesses also depend on an efficient judicial system to resolve contractual and commercial disputes.
The Nasarawa dispute is not an isolated discussion. Other states have also been working on mechanisms for implementing judiciary financial autonomy.
In Enugu, for example, the state government recently inaugurated a joint technical committee to develop a framework for implementation.
The differing approaches across states demonstrate the complexity of translating constitutional and policy principles into practical funding arrangements.
A sustainable solution will require clear funding structures, accountability mechanisms and defined responsibilities between state governments and judicial institutions.
For labour, the expectation is that financial autonomy should produce tangible improvements in the administration of justice and workers’ welfare.
For the public, the ultimate concern is that disagreements over implementation should not unnecessarily disrupt access to justice.
