NNPC Targets 12 Bcf/d Gas Production by 2030

Nigeria is targeting a major expansion of its natural gas industry, with plans to increase national gas production to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030 as the country seeks to turn its vast reserves into a stronger source of energy, industrial growth and export revenue.

The strategy includes an interim target of 10 billion cubic feet per day by 2027, compared with Nigeria’s current production levels.

The country is also seeking to expand its proven gas reserves of more than 215 trillion cubic feet toward a potential resource base exceeding 600 trillion cubic feet through increased exploration and development.

The expansion is being positioned as a commercial strategy designed to unlock greater value from Nigeria’s gas resources rather than leave large volumes of gas undeveloped.

Nigeria’s gas ambitions have both domestic and international dimensions. Increased domestic supply could support electricity generation, manufacturing and industrial activities, while stronger LNG production could increase export earnings and foreign-exchange inflows.

The development of additional LNG capacity is expected to be important to the strategy, with Nigeria LNG’s Train 7 project expected to further strengthen the country’s export capability.

The government is also seeking to attract additional private investment into gas infrastructure, including processing, transportation and monetisation projects. However, security, infrastructure, competitive pricing and reliable gas supply remain critical to achieving the ambitious targets.

Nigeria’s large gas reserves provide an opportunity to diversify the energy economy and strengthen industrial production. The major test will be converting reserves into actual production through investment in infrastructure, security and commercially viable projects.
